Step by Step

The cool thing about being a self taught artist is that you can develop your skill and style the more you draw.

Through the experience the Pets by Pencil drawings have given me, I have developed a bit of a routine when it comes each drawing.

The following shows the progression of Toby, Lisa Roger's Black Lab X.

Step 1: Outline.

Using my ipad displaying the digital image, I sketch the outline of the drawing

Step 2: Eyes, Nose and Mouth outline

Often I have to zoom in on the photo to get these right, but the next step is the outline of the eyes, nose and mouth. This is often the hardest part of the drawing because getting the proportions right can be tricky.

Step 3: Eyes, Nose and Mouth detail.

The next part is the detail of the eyes, nose and mouth which includes the light reflections, iris and pupil differentiation, nostrils and shading.

Step 4: Shading.

From here the drawing sort of turns into a colouring page where I just copy the shading in the photo.

Step 5: Finish

Minor details are touched up such as defining around the eyes and distinctive features, and then I sign it at the bottom.
